Three seniors were nominated this year for their outstanding volunteer contributions to
our community.
Vivian Ellenwood, nominated by Vi Larson, was recognized for her "sense of humor,
warm smile and compassion". She has volunteered as a member of the former Fridley
Alley Cats Kitchen Band, as an officer (Secretary and Treasurer for many terms) in the
Friendly Fridley Folks, various committees for her church (Fridley United Methodist),
fundraising for the Fridley Senior Center, as well as crafting for Cancer patients and the
Fridley Senior Crafters. Besides all her activities, she still makes time to care and
transport friends in need.
Barney Buss was nominated by the First Golden Lions Club for his contribution as
Chairperson for the Values First Senior Committee, the Golden Lion as an officer and
glasses project worker, Fridley Safety Camp-Senior Rep, and Fridley Senior Center for
fundraising, program development and as an Advisory Board member.
Clem Coverston, nominated by the Columbia Heights-Fridley Kiwanis Club, was
recognized for his continuous dedication to youth in our community though his involve-
ment with the Youth Leadership Institute, Boy Scouts, and the development of the Hang
Out at St. Phillips Church for middle school age youth. His volunteer work has also
included coordinating work for Habitat for Humanity, Sharing and Caring Hands,
co-chairing Fridley Pride City Wide and ongoing activities for the Kiwanis.

An opportunity has been made available to us to try a Senior Summer Camp at a very
reasonable rate. We will have an opportunity for hiking, fishing, canoeing, a paddle-
boat, pontoon rides and evening campfires as well as social get-togethers to play cards
and games. If you are at all interested in going to camp with us we'd like your input on
how we should put it together.
Do we charter a bus, car pool and everyone get there on their own?
Do we have community meals or each cabin fix their own?
Do we completely schedule our time or have some flexible scheduling?
How about a day trip outside of camp?
You see, lots of decisions need to be made and we want you to be a part of them.
The tenative Camp Dates will be Monday, August 19 - Thursday, August 22. The
camp is located 20 miles south of Park Rapids, MN. Cost will be determined based on
final plans and decisions about transportation and meals. It could be as inexpensive
as $20 per person. Come design your own Summer Camp, Tuesday, June 11th at
10:00am. If you are interested but can't make the meeting, please call Connie so we
have an idea of how many might be interested. This would not be a committment.
