SENIOR BOWLING
On January 30th, Maple Lanes was host to more than forty senior bowlers. New faces
continue to appear and all have seemed to enjoy the return to a good sport. On this Monday
the first drawing for the five dollar certificate was held. Emaline Haag won the
certificate from Bob's Produce and Pat Kersten received the certificate from Town Crier.
The next drawing for another two certificates will be February 27. The seniors still
continue to vie for other prizes on Mondays. No reservations are required - just pick up
your shoes and bowling ball and hike on over to Maple Lanes on Highway 65 and 64th where you
can meet old friends and make a few new ones.
HORSESHOE COURTS AVAILABLE
To all seniors, ladies and men, who are no longer interested in pitching woo, but would
like to exercise their arm pitching horseshoes, Fridley has a really nice court area that is
available during the day hours. A member of the Fridley Horseshoe Club has consented to
help the seniors with just fun play or if desired, organize a league, or both. The courts
are located on the west end of Locke Park and easily reached from University Avenue. This
would be open to Fridley seniors and their friends and neighbors. The city has a few pair
of horseshoes and other arrangements can be made. There is a covered pavilion near the
courts where a picnic could be held after a hot session of horseshoe. For further
information, call Bill Campbell at 571-6865.
A THANK YOU TO THE FFF
As an out-going president of Friendly Fridley Folks, I offer my thanks for the
remembrance given to me by the club. It was appreciated and will be put to good use. As
books have always been a prize with me, that is how the money will be spent. They will give
me much pleasure and be ever remindful of the generous people who made them possible for me.
If I can find a book that tells how to stay out of politics and enjoy life and wife, that
will be one of the first ones to be purchased. Again, thank you.

MEDICARE PREMIUMS AND DEDUCTIBLES
John E. Melssen Social Security District Manager in Minneapolis, announced that
because of continuing increases in health care costs, payment by Medicare beneficiaries will
automatically increase again in 1984.
The increases are required under 1966 Medicare law and they affect beneficiaries'
payment of hospital deductibles, co-insurance and monthly premiums.
The deductible patients pay for hospitalization under Medicare Part A (Hospital
Insurance) will increase from $304 to $356 on January 1, 1984. Deductible for the following
year is computed to reflect the difference between average daily hospital costs for the
previous year and the same costs during 1966, the year Medicare began. As the difference
between the two grows larger, the hospital deductible increases.
The rise in this deductible also increases the amount of co-insurance beneficiaries
must pay if they remain in the hospital for more than 60 days during 1984.
From the 61st through 90th day of hospitalization, the patient' s share will increase
from $76 to $89 a day. For stays beyond 90 days, Medicare's patients' cost will go up from
$152 to $178 a day.
The basic premium under Medicare Part B (Supplementary Medical Insurance) will rise
from $12.20 to $14.60 a month on January 1, 1984. The Social Security Amendments of 1983
set the monthly premium rate for calendar years 1984 and 1985 at a level equal to 25% of the
expected average costs of SMI for aged enrollees.
And remember, when you have a question about Social Security - don't ask your neighbor
or a friend - call your Social Security office. The number to call is 378-1151.
