"THE WAY OF LIFE"
A recently acquired book, "The Way of Life", was written by farm wives and compiled by a Farm
Journal editor. The articles are short criterias of farm life through the eyes of the farm
wife. Included are two articles - a poem of warmth and a young grandmother's new view.
FARM KITCHEN
I like my kitchen. The big shining stove
r ( '
With its friendly wood fire; the copper kettle singing
g g
It's contralto song; the plump pot y
With its bubbling savory stew. The rich golden smell
Of corn bread ready to take from the oven blending
With the piquant spiciness of hot gingerbread.
I like the wide painted floorboards and the
Red geraniums in the windows; the little brown pots
With trailing ivy; the view of the road
Where I can watch the R.F.D. man drive up
To the mail box. I like to see the table
Set for supper, the red cloth, blue napkins
And cream-colored dishes. The cat lies curled
On the rocking chair cushion. Shep lies beside
The stove watching every move. Soon I'll
Hear his footstep coming through the woodshed and the
Soft clink of milk pails. Storms may
Lash outside. Here in my kitchen all is warm and safe.

ALL IN THE POINT OF VIEW
At 44, I am about to become a grandmother. How thrilling it will be to be young enough
to enjoy my grandchild, to be his friend and be able to enjoy the things he enjoys.
I feel sure that grandmothers in general aren't as old as they used to be. I remember
my own gray-haired grandma - she'd have refused a dye job. We children loved her enormously,
but we didn't think of her as fun. Then there was my own mother - grandma in her turn. She
spoiled our youngsters, rocked and sang to them and humored their every notion. How patiently
I taught them to respect her age and save her strength by running errands for her.
Being an elderly grandparent must be a rewarding experience that helps fill the long,
inactive years. But I am glad my grandchildren will have a young grandmother to remember.
Excuse me a minute - here comes my seven year old son with question marks in his eyes.
What did you say, dear? Will I still be alive when you get married? I
Well, goodbye folks. This is where I came in.

GOLDEN "K" CLUB
Retired men in the Fridley-Columbia Heights area are invited to attend the Thursday morning
meetings of a new organization in our community. GOLDEN "K" is an arm of Kiwanis
International, a world-wide service organization. A new Golden "K" club is being formed with
weekly meetings in the lower auditorium of Roslyn Park Wesleyan Church, 53rd Avenue and Sixth
Street N.E. The men are meeting at 10:00 a.m. for an hour. Coffee and cookies or rolls are
served along with some sharing, and then a program of 20 to 30 minutes is given with speakers
& films covering a wide area of interests for members. The club will develop its own service
projects for its community, meeting procedures, customs and character.
All of these are accomplished in a setting which provides opportunity to meet new friends.
Information may be secured by calling Stu Anderson 781-4037 or Earl Miller 572-8094.
SENIOR FEDERATION - WHAT IS IT?
We've all heard and read so much about the Minnesota Senior Federation and wondered just
what its' purpose was in relation to the senior scene. An all inclusive report on its history
and activities could fill a book - the following is an attempt to bring out a few points of
interest.
The Minnesota Senior Federation is a combination of twelve regional areas within the
State of Minnesota. Each region has its own open boundaries with a headquarter center where
most of its business is done. As one instance, the Seven County Senior Federation has it
center in Mora. This particular Federation is made up of senior clubs throughout a local
seven county area. Just as each club has its own officers, the federation also has officers
who are drawn from members of its senior clubs. Other headquarter centers are located in St.
Cloud, Eveleth, Duluth, Elbow Lake, Montevideo, Thief River Falls, Mankato, Slayton,
Rochester, Pine River and St. Paul, which we know as the Metro Senior Federation. Each of the
twelve regional federations have their own name, officers, aims and purposes but at the same
time are a part of the Minnesota Senior Federation which combines all its efforts toward
helping seniors enjoy better retirement years. The State Federation has representatives in
state legislature and in Washington D.C. Working with other senior national organizations,
these representatives have been instrumental in preventing proposed cutbacks in senior
programs such as social security, medicare and housing. Though these efforts have not
experienced one hundred percent favorable results, the Federation has been making inroads to
national recognition. The State Federation is also alert to needed reforms in nursing homes
and other medical organizations. They have pushed for programs that could save many seniors
not only money but from discomforts of some old age problems.
At present, the State Federation has a membership of nearly 200,000 through its more than
500 senior clubs and people not associated with clubs.
Each of the regional areas collect dues from their members to help support the programs
that are promoted by the local federation. A small part of those dues go to the State
Federation to support their efforts to gain favorable legislation for seniors and their
various other programs. The state federation is strictly a non-profit organization, composed
of seniors working for seniors. As we learn more about the federation, we can have more
reason to be proud of the dedicated seniors in our State of Minnesota.
The Metro Senior Federation, though a part of the State Federation, is by far the largest
and most active. It's coverage will be in a later edition of the Fridley Senior News.

BOWLING NEWS
Maple Lanes has proven to be the meeting place of communities. Not only is bowling an
interesting sport but the bowlers get to enjoy each other. Whenever they can meet and discuss
the events of the day or week, seniors are enjoying themselves and what better place to do
that than at a relaxing bowling lane.
The last Monday of February Dorothy Smith won the five dollar certificate from Bob's
Produce Ranch and Clayton Carlson won the Town Crier certificate for five dollars. These two
business places have shown an earnest interest in the senior bowling program and hope it
continues to grow. No sign up is necessary, no records are kept, no instructors - all you
have to do is show up. Maple Lanes provides coffee, cookies and comfort. If you have
questions call 571-3520. Bowling is on Mondays and Fridays at 1:00 p.m.
