Good Day Readers!
We are going to make a small change in the senior newsletter. We
will no longer be printing the calendar of events on this page. All
activities are listed on the calendar on the back page and most
activities have a write up inside the newsletter. Hopefully, this will
help consolidate the newsletter and make room for more information.
Fridley Recreation Office
FROM THE READERS
From August 1st to August 7th, three members of the Fridley Senior
Citizens, William Heikkila, Jake and Florence Wojciak attended the
Elderhostel at Morehead Stae University. The Elderhostel is a
nation-wide program where senior citizens attend classes in a number of
subjects in a University setting.
There were 41 seniors that attended this session at Morehead State
University. The program included studies in, "The Roaring Twenties",
"Individual and the Society", and "Modern Music, An Aesthetic Sound
Barrier." The daily schedule included two-1 hour 15 minutes classes in
the morning, followed by one class after lunch. The program included
housing and board in the student dormintories wth a number of extra
activities. A buffet dinner party with barbecued chicken and champagne,
a steak fry at the Ponderosa Golf Club and a dinner at the Bonanza
restaurant in Fargo. We also were treated to a 1923 silent movie, "The
Three Ages", starring Buster Keaton and "The Elephant Man", presented by
the Straw Hat Players, starring Gerry Verdorn of the Guiding Light on
CBS television. The week was concluded by a fairwell banquet on Friday
night, a program presented and created by the Elderhostelers, and
election of a King and Queen. All participants received a diploma on
completion of the program and was well accepted by all. The finale was
the singing of "God Bless America".
Saturday morning we had our last breakfast at the dorm, and after a
fond fairwell to our fellow students, we departed for home, with
memories of the most rewarding week we have ever experienced. Many of
us will participate in the Elderhostel program again next year.
