The following is an essay contest winner on the subject of Grandparents
from Rice Creek Elementary School.
GRANDPARENTS
Grandparents are great and fun to have around. I'm still not sure
whether the grand in grandparents stands for old or grand, meaning great.
Grandparents are nice, but once in a while they get mad at us and even yell
at us, but I know they do that because they care and love us. I think
there is a different love between kids and parents and kids and
grandparents. It is no worse or better, but I know it's not the same.
Grandparents believe you even if everybody else says you' re wrong, they
still stand by your side. I remember once my sister started a fight and
she ended up crying. My Mom blamed me but my grandma spoke up and told my
mom the truth. My sisters were blamed and my Mom apologized.
Most people can't imagine a grandma mountain climbing or doing other
active things, but my grandma does. After my grandpa died, I thought my
grandma would never be active again. Boy, was I wrong. Now she goes
hiking, mountain climbing and she went to Las Vegas all ready. She is in
Arizona now. I guess that proves that widows are and can be active as
younger people.
My conclusion is, grandparents are great.

Days are hot and muggy
The flowers a brilliant hue;
While early in the morning
There's not a trace of dew.
Often times it's very still
You wish the wind would blow.
Yet when it does it brings a storm
With quite a lightning show.
The kids are off to summer camp
To frolic with their friends.
Sometimes they hate it just at first
ZZ But hate it more when it ends.
Everywhere are families
Filling picnic grounds.
Some days there are so many
You can hardly turn around.
Some fruits are ready to be picked
Some vegetables are too.
Along the roads are food stands
With tempting fare for you.

July, the seventh month is here
So many things to be done
It seems to fly and go on past
Before it's quite begun!
