TRIBUTE TO A QUEEN
For the second time in a raw, a Fridley senior citizen has been selected to represent
Anoka County as an outstanding senior citizen.
This contest initiated three years ago, mostly through the efforts of R.S.V.P.
coordinator, Esther Olson, encourages all areas of Anoka County to chose their outstanding
senior citizens and enter them in the county wide competition held during County Fair week.
Entrants, one woman and one man, will vie for the honor of representing Anoka County at the
State Fair where a state outstanding senior will be chosen.
Last year, Alex Berberich carried his credits to the Minnesota State Fair where he was
in competition with other men from all over the State of Minnesota. This year, Edna
Pearson, one half of Edna and Arvid, was accorded the honor of representing Anoka County at
the State Fair. When Edna heard the announcement of the final results, she evidenced
surprise, stating that she felt that there were others better qualified - apparently the
judges thought otherwise.
Edna, in her many years of helping others, could only claim the works that she had
done since the age of 65 and then only for work associated with senior programs. But that
proved sufficient to attain the honors that were acclaimed to her . Though Edna is
reluctant to discuss her activities among the seniors, they include various tasks at
Congregate Dining, active member of Retired Seniors Volunteer Program and numerous church
benevolent groupls, and all around assistant to any one in need. The seniors of Fridley,
especially the Friendly Fridley Folks, all wish Edna the best in her sojourn to the State
Fair, where the competition is accelerated. But win or lose, Edna and her aplomb will be
accepted in her home town as outstanding senior citizen for all times.
Perhaps the author of this poem had people like Edna in mind when he wrote:
IS ANYONE HAPPIER BECAUSE YOU PASSED HIS WAY
DOES ANYONE REMEMBER THAT YOU SPOKE TO HIM TODAY
CAN YOU SAY TONIGHT, IN PARTING WITH THE DAY, THAT'S SLIPPING FAST
THAT YOU HELPED A SINGLE BROTHER OF MANY THAT YOU PASSED
IS A SINGLE HEART REJOICING OVER WHAT YOU DID OR SAID
DOES THE MAN WHOSE HOPES WERE FADING NOW WITH COURAGE LOOK AHEAD
AS YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES IN SLUMBER, DO YOU THINK THAT GOD WILL SAY
YOU HAVE EARNED ONE MORE TOMORROW BY THE WORK YOU DID TODAY.
And Edna can say YES.
The following is the third and final essay on Grandparents. This essay was written by Greg
King, Rice Creek Elementary School.
I hardly knew my Lola, or Filipino grandmother, before she died. My Lola wa a very
loving person according to my mother. My grandfather in America and his wife are dead
also. My grandfather was always quiet when we visited so when he died of a heart attack, I
hardly knew him. My American grandmother died of cancer and I loved her. She was very
nice and always had candy out for the kids. She was very happy, or so it seemed, and
laughed a lot. She never got mad at us and never ignored us or pretended not to hear us.
Whenever she was called she was there. Now I only have my Filipino grandfather, or Lolo,
left. He listens when my parents won't. He is very strict but loves to tell and listen to
stories. He was very wise and when I was feeling bad, he could help. Now I'm afraid he
will die. If he did he lives so far away, the Philippines, I wouldn't know right away and
I wouldn't be there to talk to him and say I'll miss him dearly. I was in the Philippines
when Grandma died and I'm afraid I'll be in America when Lolo dies. I hope it's not soon.

instructional class for beginners as well as for those who have had some lessons. I repeat
- September 21st, 11:00 a.m. at Community Education Building, 61st Avenue and 7th Street. f
Seniors, there is more coming. We are planning a regular dance to be held on Sunday,
October 23rd from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. For those who do not wish to dance, there will be card
playing, pool playing, or just visiting.
Watch your newsletter and bulletin board at the Drop-In Center for future programs.
Pool and cribbage tournaments are being planned, also bingo and shuffle board. While
you are attending these functions, plan on eating at Congregate Dining. Notify them two
days in advance for meals.

LEISURE LEAGUE
The Senior Leisure League Club from Redeemer Lutheran Church meets on the third
Thursday of each month. During the winter months, most of the meetings are held at the
church. In the summer they go on different trips. In August they went to Hayward,
Wisconsin to the lumber camp.
The September meeting will be at Nita and Clarence Olsons. Former Pastor and Mrs.
Stone will hopefully be joining us. ++
We want to extend an invitation that more of the seniors from church join the group.
At the present time we have around 85 members.
If you would like to know more about the club, please call Esther Campbell, President,
571-6865.
