As I sit here reminiscing over the past few months, the H. B. Fuller
dinner and bingo party comes to mind. What a beautiful party that was
for about 250 lucky Fridley seniors! The H. B. Fuller Company and
employees are to be commended for the time and effort they put into
staging that wonderful day. It will long be remembered.
Other Fridley groups have been very generous to the Senior Drop-In
Center. Fridley VFW Post #363 has given us a cash donation plus a
beautiful new color television set for the Center . The t
Fridley/Columbia Heights Golden K has donated the proceeds from the
successful garage sale sponsored by the Senior Center. Additional
funding has been granted through Community Block Grants to purchase
fans, new tables for Congregate Dining and other items to spruce up
the Center. The seniors are grateful for the generosity shown by the
local clubs and citizens. Where would we be without them?
Card Playing has continued all summer in the air conditioned comfort
of the Center. The turn out has not been bad considering the hot -
summer weather. Pool players are not so lucky as to have air
conditioning, but the two fans do help and both cards and pool playing f
will continue on a regular basis.
Plans are well under way for our upcoming Fall session. Be sure to
read the newsletter for schedules.

R In recent years, studies conducted by medical, scientific & social science professionals
have lightened the load that has haunted older people for the past century or more. In
our own younger days, we can recall such sayings as, "He's old, that's why he's that way"
or you have to over look her actions, she's getting on you know. " All an older person
had to do was make one or two boners and "yup, he's getting up there." These labels were
tagged on older people by younger people who wanted to be set apart from a class of people j
that they considered somewhat weak or useless. The older people generally accepted this
condition, partly because they believed it as true & partly because they saw no reason to
offer a reprisal.
Noted English Philospher, Bertrand Russell, while in his eighties, was among the early
proponents admonishing the populace for their unscientific way of gathering evidence
concerning the aging. Not all mental imbalances are due to brain damage. Today
experienced doctors & social workers note that much of the senility associated with older
people is due to anemia, malnutrition & infection and is reversible. Contrary to common
belief, older people do respond favorably to treatment.
In recent polls, about 19% to 35% of those questioned considered older persons "not too
bright, open minded or able to get things done." In observations and tests conducted by
social workers, these opinions have little foundation. Older people do not experience a
decline in learning abilities vocabulary. Many seniors in their sixties & seventies
experience an increase in their skills & talents. Only seniors with actual brain damage
had more difficulty remembering things than their younger counterparts. Depression is
prevalent among all ages but is no more untreatable among older adults than the young.
One of the major fallacies attributed to age is that they are set in their ways. Tests
have shown that most older people are more adaptable to change that today's youth. Older
adults have had to adjust: There have been more dramatic changes in their lifetime than
in any previous time in history.
From Lizzie to SST, Licorice to LSD, Crystal to VCR. Tinytype to Polaroid, all are
examples of spectacular scientific advancements.
Even though seniors, in general, are departing from the sterotype set for them years ago,
there are many who feel alone, unaccepted, & useless. In the past, most help that was
available for older people was just given to them. Today's social worker has reversed the
trend from free handouts to encouraging the seniors to help themselves. This new approach
has been much more receptive and practical in attaining a higher level of personal
development among seniors. Agism, facing similar battles to racism & sexism, has come out
of the backroom.
Between now & the next 25 years, older people will see a continuing change in attitudes &
environments. Even today, there is a decided rise in education levels & opportunities in
older americans. Marriages among older adults are on the upswing. There are more job
opportunities for those that need or want work. The political picture is considerably
more promising due primarily to such organizations as our own Metro Senior Federation, &
the National Council on Aging. Older americans have senior centers & church groups where
they can communicate with other people, get away from sedentary blahs, develop new skills,
entertain new interests, awaken a new awareness, & generally make the most of the years
that they have worked so hard to earn in earlier days. The success of these organizations
depend directly on seniors. Their help & cooperation is needed if these organizations are
to continue providing the desired services.
Seniors, you are important; the nation needs you; the people need you & you need you. If
anyone disputes your importance, just square up your shoulders, pull up your chest & above
all keep your chin up! Remember, we all start to age the minute thar we' re born & the
process continues for a lifetime.
