METRO SENIOR FEDERATION CONVENTION
Monday, October 21, 1985 at 7:30 a.m. ten Friendly Fridley Folks
delegates boarded a comfortable bus and set off for the Minneapolis
Covention Arena to attend the fourteenth Metro Senior Federation
Convention. Upon arrival the delegates signed in and were directed to
their assigned table and then sat back to enjoy the singing of James
Murray before meeting time. President Carl Carlson brought the
meeting to order and the business of the day began with election of a
convention chairperson and other pertinent officers. Following a few
other items of business the election of officers took place with the
office of president being the only contested position, Carl E. Carlson
retained the office of president. 31 resolutions, as advocated by
committee, were presented to the delegates for affirmation. This was
the only event that was somewhat tedious but necessary because all
resolutions must be ratified by the general assembly of delegates
before they can be presented to any of the specified agencies.
About 11:15 Carl E. Carlson gave his acceptance address in which
he gave a very brief resume of what the Metro Federation was doing and
attempting to do for the betterment of the older people in the state
of Minnesota. President Carlson has a way of imparting a lot of
information with few words in a short time. Just before lunch,
Abigail Van Buren (Dear Abby) gave a short talk to the delegates
encouraging them to hang in there in their fight to gain recognition
for the senior segment of our nations population. Abby stated that
our country has the greatest Gross National Product (business
exchange) in the world, but it is only seventeenth in its provision
for senior care. With the help of such organization as the Metro
Senior Federation the picture is changing Abby urged all seniors to
lend their assistance where ever possible.
Preceeding and during lunch James Murray again demonstrated his
ability in song, a nice compliment to a very fine lunch of chicken.
Following lunch, Abby gave her main address, urging the seniors to
take advantage of the many opportunities open to seniors that will
help them enjoy and profit in their retirement years.
The delegates then had an opportunity to visit booths displaying
many items related to the senior sector. Time prevented visits to all
of the booths . The products and services that were provided for
viewers was overwhelming.
The afternoon was completed with several seminars. In these
informative meetings numerous things relevant seniors were explained
by leaders versed in a specific field.
At four o'clock, the bus was ready to take the Fridley folks back
to their awn nest in suburbia. It is really quite an experience and
more club members should avail themselves the opportunity to attend
this event at least once. The Friendly Fridley Folks pays the expense
for ten delegates each year. Others may attend by paying their own
way which many do. Those attending this year from Fridley as
delegates were Alex Berberich, Lucille Zander, Willa Gonsior, Alverna
& Tony Lorbeski, Ernie Powell, Vivian Baker, Esther & Bill Campbell, &
hel Halberg.
