FRIENDLY FRIDLEY FOLKS MEE'T'INGS
DEC. 1.60 1980 - Following the pledge- of a1.legiancc to the flag, Alice Fugere, fellow member
and Greyhound Representative wished all other members a happy Holiday. Alice also spoke very
briefly on future tours for 1981 after thanking everyone who had gone an any of the Greyhound
Travel fours.
The Sunshine girl, Ruth Martin, spread some of that sunshine with her rendition of an all-
time favorite Christmas song. If Santa was listening he will surely got those two front teeth
for her before next Christmas.
On behalf of the Friendly Fridley folks, Connie McMillion presented a gift of a rod and
reel to out-going president Alex Berberich as a show of appreciation for his efforts in office.
Club members, in their respect for Alex, felt that he has taken his official responsibility very
seriously as evidenced in the manner that he kept club members up-dated on related activities
and informed of community news. Collecting data on story telling was one of Alexs' extra
features.
Employee representatives Marcia Etlicher, Mary Ingaldson, Jan Klinsing, and Shirley Ann
Johnson took time off from their duties at the Fridley State Bank to accommodate club members
with a short but ;informative talk on recently adopted NOW Accounts. These new accounts are a
combined savings and checking accounts with interest at the same level as a regular account
and no service charge if the accounts fall no lower than a certain level ($600.00 for seniors).
Additional information is readily available at the Fridley State Bank - 571-2200.
After concluding the business part of the meeting, members turned their attention to the
pleasant sounds of the Treble Tones, a chorus of twenty two ladies from the metro area. Under
the direction of Gloria Grothe and with Dorothy Janikowski as accompanist, the singers put
their sixteen years of experience to excellent use in a program of familiar and a few unusual
Christmas carols. This spring, members and the public in general can hear the Treble Tones in a
concert when they will raise money for a scholarship in music at the University of Minnesota.
Shortly after the conclusion of the singing treat, club members were guests to another
treat in the form of coffee, cookies,' and ice cream. A gift from the Fridley State Bank to the
Friendly Fridley Folks. The four ladies from the bank served as hostesses, giving the club
Refreshment Committee a well-deserved day of rest and relaxation.
Included in the Christmas party, the last event of the day, was a drawing for prizes
donated by Fridley businessmen. Some prizes reaching twenty five dollars in value. Then an
exchange of gifts where each member put a gift on a table upon arrival and later was handed
a gift. There were many pleasant suprizes. A vote of thanks was given to Bea Kryzer for her
efforts of collecting so many prizes from the business places. Last but not least, Bea Kryzer,
on behalf of the club, presented Connie McMillion with a giftofappreciation of the extra work
she does for the club. In receiving the gift, Connie stated that she really didn't deserve any
extra consideration which was one time she wasn't in accordance with the rest of the Friendly
Fridley Folks.
JAN. 6, 1981 - The first meeting of the new year was conducted by newly elected President Pony
Lorbeski. Other officers in attendance were Vice President Alex Berberich, Secretary Esther
Campbell, and `Treasurer Faye Kopp.
First business of the evening was a talk by Jack Hansen, Co-chairman of the Fridley
Community Recreation Building Needs Assessment Committee. Mr. Hansen's concern is with the
feasibility of a community building in the park that is now being developed on University Avenue
west of the Columbia Arena. Such factors as financing, usages, maintenance, and sharing with
other organizations was the foremost topic of the talk. Club members were asked to express an
opinion, by way of a questionnaire, and a majority favored the proposal.
The Sunshine Committee, Ruth Martin, reported that Bobby Maddison appreciated all of the
cards that she received while she was a patient at Unity Hospital. Ruth also noted that three
more members, Maude Williams, Bill Heikkila, and 1-Ijalmer Anderson had entered Unity Hospital
for various reasons.
Several committees are being formed under the guidance of the club officers and the club
officers and their reports will be included in future news items.
Club Coordinator, Connie McMillion, announced that craft classes would be starting at the
Village Green on January 24th. Also, the Senior Slim classes would resume on January 28th at
the Community Education Center.
While relaxing with coffee and doughnuts, members were fortunate to have Vernon Hansen, a
local musician from Bloomington as entertainment for the evening. Vernon, an accordionist,
played and sang some of the old time numbers that were so good to listen to and dance to a few
years ago or so. His return was a welcome event.
