FRIENDLY FRIDLEY FOLKS
CLUB NEWS
SENIOR ROYALTY
The Friendly Fridley Folks have selected two of their members to represent them in the county-
wide contest to choose two outstanding seniors as King and Queen. Dorothy Zacher and Herb
Bergstrom will compete with other seniors who hope to be named outstanding seniors of Anoka
County. In determining the winners, the judges will consider personal traits, humane traits ,
and mainly, dedicated involvement in community affairs. Community interests include volunteer
work in church organizations, school groups , youth clubs, and neighborhood benevolent organiza-
tions. All contestants will have a special day at the County Fair in August when the eventual
winners will be announced. The King and Queen selected to be Anoka County representatives will
then have an opportunity to vie with other county winners in a state-wide contest. A special
day will be set aside at the State Fair for the county winners and winners of the ultimate
honor will be announced on that day.
Dorothy and Herb will ride on the Friendly Fridley Folks float in the 49'er Days Parade.
You' ll recognize them - they' ll be ones who look like Roy Rogers and Dale Evans.
49'ER FUN
In connection with Fridley' s 49'er Days, the Friendly Fridley Folks will sponsor a dance
especially for seniors of Fridley and neighboring areas. The dance, held at the Knights of
Columbus Hall located on Highway 65 in Fridley will be Wednesday, June 2.4. The dance will
start at 7:00 p.m. , and last until 9:30 p.m. A local band, the Vikings, well-known for
their old-time music, will furnish the music. There is no charge for the dance and soft
drinks will be available, so you'all come either to cut-up on the boards or just to listen
on the cushions.
The annual Bowling Tournament sponsored by the Friendly Fridley Folks during 49'er Days will
again be at Maple Lanes located in Fridley. The date is Thursday, June 25. Two shifts
will be held, one shift being at 10:00 a.m. , and the second shift at 1 :00 p.m. In addition
to the various trophies that are awarded for high scores, there are numerous other prizes
that will be given away at drawings during the entire tournament. Entry fee is a nominal
$3.50 per person and a handicap system will be used. All seniors 55 orover can enter by
calling Maple Lanes at 571-3520 or by entry forms that will be available some time in May.
ENTERTAINMENT
The 72 members and 4 guests who attended the April 21st meeting, listend to and sang along
with Roger VanBurgen as he sang songs from a former era of music. Roger also sings and
leads sing-a-longs at his place of business, the Big B' s, located on Osborne Road.
For the May 5th meeting, which was the annual Pot-luck supper, the club later had the opportuni
of hearing an exceptionally well -trained singing chorus. For an opening number, they sang a
song from a modern opera which was really a thrill . Not only was the singing superb, but
their accompanying dance added verve to the performance. In two other songs, both from
modern music they sang, acted, and danced better than someone who gets paid for their work. In
the song from the senior days, "In the Mood", they proved their versatility by putting both
the same excitement, captivation, and music ability as they did in the music of the younger
generation. They? The Fridley High School Pops Choir. And there' s no doubt that the listener
unaccustomed to today' s music as they are, were impressed by this very talented and considerate
group of young boys and girls. They could put T.V. out of business very easily. During a
short break, while the ensemble caught their- breath, the engaging High School Quartet sang
two numbers as only they could sing them - they' re different. Dave Ryan , Choral Director,
can be justly proud of his singers and himself.
PARKS
Seniors who wish to use the county parks in Anoka and Hennepin can do so at no cost if the
visits are during week days. In Anoka County parks, there is no charge anytime except parking
fees at three beach parks: Lake George, Coon Lake , and Golden Lake. Seniors with proof of
age, are charged one half of the normal charge of one dollar per car. In Hennepin County

parks, an issued card is required which can be obtained (no charge) by first calling 4j3-4693.,
A registration card, along with a brochure of location and description of parks will be sent
which should then be presented at their headquarters in Elm Creek Park or in the Coon Rapids
Dam Park where a pass will be issued which is good for one year.
UNDERSTANDING INSURANCE
The Minnesota legislature recently passed a law affecting persons over 65 who have both
Medicare and no fault insurance. The new law considers Medicare primary coverage, which may
result in a reduction in rates for the personal injury protection (PIP) part of your no-
fault insurance. Primary coverage is a term used to describe the company first required
to compensate for a claim.
Jim Kelly, an insurance analyst for the Minnesota Department of Commerce, said the new law
is "the result of the state legislature recognizing that most senior citizens have Medicare
coverage. In the event of an accident, however, the INSURANCE company is required to pay
because the PIP is considered primary coverage.
The new law could result in premium adjustments of up to 40 percent on the PIP portion of
,your auto insurance premium. Contact your insurance agent for more information on how you
can qualify.
FEDERATION IS DEPENDABLE GUIDE TO HEALTH CARE - W. T. Connors, Metro Senior Federation
Seniors throughout the state are being solicited by health insurers of every kind and descrip-
tion. Many of these insurance propositions are not what they purport to be. Most fall short
of the insurance coverages endorsed by the Metropolitan Senior Federation. Seniors would be
well -advised to be wary of most of them. One such company currently marketing its insurance
by mail is National Senior Citizens Group Trust, a Pennsylvania organization. Their material
included a green plastic card and a certificate personalized with the recipient's name. This
material does not come from the Federation, nor is the Federation connected in any way with it.
The Pennsylvania firm was, in fact, under investigation by the Minnesota Insurance Commissioner.
The Commissioner was seeking to prevent the firm from doing business by mail in Minnesota. The
plan does not meet the minimum standards of a qualified Medicare supplement policy as defined
by the Minnesota Insurance Commissioner's Office. It covers only some Part A Medicare expenses
and no Part B expenses.
This plan , and other-, li !,eit, may be endorsed by a celebrity from the entertainment world or
other prominent person who is unaware of the shortcomings of the plan to which he is lending
his name and reputation.
The Federation offers Minnesota seniors their best guidance to quality health care coverage.
The Federation has carefully researched virtually all of the available health care providers.
The Federation has negotiated with the providers in behalf of the Federation members just as an
employer negotiates Group coverages for its employees. The result has been the Federation
major medical insurance plan, state-wide, and for metro area members, three Health Maintenance
Organizations (HMO) . The HMO's are: HHO Minnesota, Physician' s Health Plan and SHARE. This
unprecedented choice is unequaled anywhere in the country. All are quality plans offering
broad benefits at the best available price. Seniors who are enrolled in Medicare A and B,
and have no additional protection should investigate the Federation-endorsed plans. There are
serious gaps in what Medicare covers. Additional coverage is almost a necessity. The
Metropolitan Federation has also endorsed ten no-cost hospital plans for those on limited
incomes. For details on all of these plans, call the Metropolitan Senior Federation at 645-0261.
*The Pletro Senior Federation is a non-profit organization composed and run by seniors from
throughout the area. It has an excellent track record and can be trusted,
