RESOLUTION NO. 2020 - 56
A RESOLUTION DIRECTING PUBLIC SAFETY DEPARTMENT TO
ENTER INTO AN AGREEMENT AND AUTHORIZING EXECUTION OF
MINNESOTA DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY, OFFICE OF TRAFFIC
SAFETY, FEDERAL GRANT PROGRAM AGREEMENT FOR DWI OFFICER
WHEREAS, the National Safety Council estimates the cost of alcohol related crashes in Minnesota was
nearly $290 million in 2018; and
WHEREAS, in the same year, twenty-three percent of serious injuries sustained in crashes and thirty-two
percent of traffic crash fatalities were alcohol related; and
WHEREAS, Anoka County had the third highest rate of such incidents, falling under Hennepin and
Ramsey County; and
WHEREAS, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has a mandate to promote safety of those
who use publication roadways and has approved funding for such program; and
WHEREAS, the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety provides for a grant supporting full-time officers
dedicated to DWI enforcement; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fridley applied for and was awarded the federal grant funding beginning on
October 1, 2020.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Fridley hereby supports the grant
and directs the Fridley Department of Public Safety to enter into a grant agreement with the Minnesota
Department of Public Safety for the DWI Officer grant during the period from October 1, 2020, through
September 30, 2021.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Fridley hereby authorizes the City
Manager and Public Safety Director to execute such agreements and amendments as are necessary to
implement the project on behalf of Fridley Department of Public Safety and to be the fiscal agent and
administer the grant.
