A written response or additional documents may be necessary and are due prior to completion of the Final Inspection and approval for issuance of the Certificate of Occupancy or Fire Department permit completion. You may contact the Office of the Fire Marshal at (763) 572-3621 for additional information. 1. The proposed paint booth and area shall comply with applicable provisions in 2007 MSFC Chapter 15, 2007 MSFC Chapter 34, Flammable and Combustible Liquids and 2003 National Fire Protection Association Standard 33, Spray Applications Utilizing Flammable and Combustible Materials. Installation of the booth, ventilation and fire protection shall be compliant with applicable code provisions as cited above and manufacturer’s instructions to maintain listing and approval for use. 2. Electrical wiring and equipment shall comply with 2007 MSFC Chapter 15 and NFPA Standard 70, National Electrical Code. (2007 1503.2.1) 3. Electrical wiring and equipment in flammable vapor areas shall be explosion-proof type approved for use in such hazardous locations and shall be classified as Class I, Division I or Class II, Division II in accordance with the National Electrical Code. (2007 MSFC 1503.2.1.1) 4. Electrical wiring and equipment located outside of, but within 5 feet horizontally or 3 feet vertically of openings in a spray booth, shall be approved for locations as required by 2007 MSFC 1503.2.1.3. 5. Electrical equipment, flammable vapor areas or drying operations subject to splashing or dripping of liquids shall be specifically approved for locations containing deposits of readily ignitable residue and explosive vapors. (2007 MSFC 1503.2.1.2) 6. Open flame and spark - producing devices shall not be located within the flammable vapor area and not located within 20 feet unless separated by a permanent partition. (2007 MSFC 1503.2.2) 7. Metal parts of booth, exhaust ducts and piping conveying Class I or II liquids shall be electrically grounded in accordance with the National Electrical Code. 8. Smoking shall be prohibited in flammable vapor areas and hazardous materials storage rooms or areas associated with flammable with flammable finish processes. No Smoking signs complying with 2007 MSFC Section 310 shall be conspicuously posted in such areas and shall be visible from the entry to such areas.. (2007 MSFC 1503.2.6) 9. Welding, cutting and similar spark-producing operations shall not be conducted in or adjacent to flammable vapor or hazardous materials storage and mixing areas. (2007 MSFC 1504.2.7) 10. The storage, use, dispensing or handling of flammable or combustible liquids shall comply with provisions of 2007 MSFC 1503.3 and 2007 MSFC Chapter 34, Flammable and Combustible Liquids. 11. Metal parts of spray booths, exhaust ducts and piping systems conveying Class I and II liquids shall be electrically grounded in accordance with the National Electrical Code. (2007 MSFC 1503.2.5) 12. Booth shall be installed so that all parts of the booth are readily accessible for cleaning. A clear space of 3 feet shall be maintained on all sides of the completed booth prohibiting any storage or combustible construction. (2007 MSFC 1504.3.2.5) 13. An automatic fire-extinguishing system shall be installed in spray booth. This protection shall extend to exhaust plenums, exhaust ducts and both sides of dry filters when such filters are used. A City of Fridley FD permit is required for this work. (2007 MSFC 1504.4) 14. Fire extinguishers equipped with extinguishing agent compatible to the automatic fire-extinguishing system referred to in Condition 13 shall be provided with a minimum classification of 80B for each booth. (2007 MSFC 1504.4.1) 15. Incompatible finishing materials shall not be alternately used for finishing unless all deposits of one material are removed from the booth prior to spraying with a different material. (2007 MSFC 1504.5.1) 16. Mechanical ventilation shall be kept in operation at all times while spraying operations are being conducted and for a sufficient time thereafter to allow vapors and finishing material residue to be exhausted. (2007 MSFC 1504.7) 17. Spraying equipment shall be interlocked with the ventilation of flammable vapor areas such that spraying operations cannot be conducted unless the ventilation system is in operation. (2007 MSFC 1504.7.1) 18. Air makeup and flammable vapor area exhaust systems shall shut down and make-up dampers close during a fire alarm event or condition. (2007 MSFC 1504.8.2) 19. Air intake filters that are a part of a wall or ceiling assembly shall be listed as Class I or II in accordance with UL Standard 900. Exhaust filters shall be required. (2007 MSFC 1504.7.8) 20. Overspray collection filters shall be readily removable and accessible for cleaning or replacement. (2007 MSFC 1504.7.8.2) 21. Visible gauges, audible alarms or pressure - activated devices shall be installed to indicate or ensure that the required air velocity is maintained. (2007 MSFC 1504.7.8.3) 22. Discarded filter pads shall be immediately removed to a safe, detached location or placed in a non- combustible container with a tight fitting lid and disposed of properly. (2007 MSFC 1504.7.8.5) 23. Termination points for exhaust ducts conveying flammable vapors, fumes or dusts shall not be less than 30 feet from the property line; 10 feet from openings into the building; 6 feet from exterior walls and roofs; 30 feet from combustible walls or openings into the building that are in the direction of exhaust discharge; 10 feet above adjoining grade. (2007 MSFC 24. Containers supplying spray nozzles shall be of a closed type or provided with metal covers, which are kept closed. Containers resting on floors shall be on noncombustible supports or suspended by wire cables. (2007 MSFC 1503.3.1) 25. Containers and piping to which a hose or flexible connection is attached shall be provided with a shutoff valve at the connection. Such valves shall be kept shut when hoses are not in use. (2007 MSFC 1503.3.2) 26. When a flammable mixture is transferred from one portable container to another, a bond shall be provided between the two containers. At least one container shall be grounded. (2007 MSFC 1503.3.4) 27. Liquids shall be transported by means of closed containers, approved safety cans, or approved portable tanks, or shall be transferred by means of a piping system. Open containers shall not be used for moving or storing liquids. (2003 NFPA 33:8.3.4) 28. Dispensing or transfer of liquids from containers, mixing of liquids, and filling of containers, including portable mixing tanks and “pressure pots,” shall be done only in a mixing room or in a spray area. (2003 NFPA 33:8.3.1) 27. Flammable vapor areas, exhaust fan blades and exhaust ducts shall be kept free from the accumulation of combustible residues. (2007 MSFC 1503.4) 28. Scrapers, spuds and other tools used for cleaning purposes shall be constructed of nonsparking materials. (2007 MSFC 1503.4.1) 29. Residues removed during cleaning and debris contaminated with residue shall be immediately removed from the premises and properly disposed. (2007 MSFC 1503.4.2) 30. Approved metal waste cans equipped with self-closing lids shall be provided wherever rags or waste are impregnated with finish material. Such rags and waste shall be deposited therein immediately after being utilized. The contents of waste cans shall be properly disposed of at least once daily and at the end of each shift. (2007 MSFC 1503.4.3) 31. Final inspection and testing shall be conducted by Fire Marshal upon completion of this project. 32.
