Assistance At Fire Scene May 15, 2008 Yellow
I. PURPOSE
To provide guidelines to personnel in their response to fire calls and their
responsibility at the scene.
II. POLICY
The responsibility for fire calls is primarily that of the Fire Department. The
Police Department will assist at the scene of a fire when requested by the Fire
Department or when an officer feels there is a high probability human life may be
in jeopardy. Routine advisories by Central Communications that the Fire
Department is responding should not be considered alone as a call or request for
assistance.
III. PROCEDURE
A. Officers will respond in an emergency status to fire calls involving any
normally occupied dwelling or building.
B. The assigned officer or supervisor may drive to the scene of any fire call
in a non-emergency status to gather information and assess the need for
any assistance to the Fire Department.
C. Once the Fire Department Officer in Charge (OIC) has arrived on the
scene officers shall consult with the OIC to determine what assistance is
needed. Police personnel will notify the OIC before leaving the scene.
D. Police vehicles will be parked at the fire scene so as to not hinder the Fire
Department’s vehicles and equipment. Officers will also ensure their
vehicles are not blocked in by the fire apparatus.
E. An ICR will be completed whenever police action is taken at a fire scene.
