Title: Comprehensive Plan Update - Joint Council & Commissions Kickoff
Background
Every ten years, the City of Fridley is required to update its Comprehensive Plan (CPU) for
submission to the Metropolitan Council. This process began at the end of 2025 when the City
received its official "System Statement" from the Met Council. The City is now embarking on a
multi-year process to envision Fridley’s growth through 2050. This update will balance technical
requirements—such as new mandates for Climate and Natural Resources—with a thoughtful
community engagement process designed to build a shared vision for our future.
At this meeting, the Council and Commissions will receive an overview of the Comprehensive
Plan Update process and requirements and planned milestones. Community Development staff
will be joined by consulting planner Rita Trapp from HKGi.
At the end of the presentation, policymakers will be asked to share their thoughts on the
following topics:
What has been the City’s experience with using the 2040 Plan?
What elements need to change for 2050?
Are there any specific areas or topics that the City wants to focus on for 2050?
What 2 or 3 things do you think will be most important for Fridley to address in the next
10 to 20 years?
Are there events, community groups or gathering places that you think would be
appropriate and effective venues for seeking input and feedback on the Comprehensive
Plan?
