Brick Institute of America Guidelines-
Never use mortar as the crown material but instead use poured
cement.
Make sure the crown is at least 2 inches thick at the thinnest part.
Make sure the crown extends at least 2 1/2 inches beyond the chimney
wall.
Slope the crown downward from the flue liner towards the edge of the
chimney walls
The crown should not touch the flue liner, install expansion joints/use
sealant between the flue liner and crown
Maintain proper distances between top of the flue liner and top of the
installed crown.
THE BASIC SIMPLICITY- A crown should have overhanging sides, it
should be sloped to divert water and it should be made of cement and
not mortar mix.
