RES 1981-125 - 00006366• F114 • • � a • 111 Ij R I WHEREAS, the Internal Revenue Service has issued Revenue Ruling 81 -58 that appears to remove the exemption on earnings of police and fire relief associations from federal taxation; and WHEREAS, the effect of this ruling could result in the more doubling of the cities annual contribution to the police and fire pensions funds; and WHEREAS, the effect of this ruling results in double taxation and a tremendous burden on all taxpayers in the City of Fridley. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Fridley urges its United States Senators, Boschwitz and Durenburger, and Representative Martin Sabo to work closely with our police and fire relief associations to obtain an extension of the effective date of Revenue Ruling 81 -58 by one year; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Fridley supports the immediate passage of legislation correcting the exemption problem by creating an exemption similar to the exemption teachers have under I.R.C. 501(C)(11), making it retroactive if necessary.
