RES 1982-52 - 00005987MMUnM ED. 52 -19M WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Fridley is entrusted with the authority to define, prohibit, abate, and suppress all things detrimental to the health, morals, comfort, safety, convenience and welfare of the inhabitants of the city and all nuisances and causes thereof; and WHEREAS, the detonation of a nuclear weapon in the Tfain Cities area would be utterly destructive to the persons and property of the citizens of Fridley and detrimental in the extreme to their health, safety and wefare; and WHEREAS, the escalating international nuclear arms race substantially increases the likelihood of an atomic war and the subjection of the citizens of Fridley to the ravages of an atomic attack; and WHEREAS, a freeze on the production and deployment of nuclear weapons is a necessary first step toward de- escalation of the arms race and creation of a stable, peaceful world truly safe from nuclear destruction; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Fridley hereby calls upon the governments of the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics to adopt a mutual freeze on the testing, production and deployment of nuclear weapons and of missiles and new aircraft designed primarily to deliver nuclear weapons.
