WHEREAS, the City of Mounds View recently experienced a failure in an
underground fuel distribution line operated by Williams Pipeline; and
WHEREAS, this failure resulted in the death of two persons and considerable
property damage; and
WHEREAS, this failure also contributed to the contamination of ground water
and soil; and
WHEREAS, underground pipelines are also located in the City of Fridley; and
WHEREAS, the residents of Fridley are also concerned with the status and
condition of these underground pipelines.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City of Fridley that we support the
position of the City of Mounds View with the National Transportation Safety
Board's Office of Pipeline Safety to require the following actions:
1. Visual inspection of pipelines be conducted
2. The pipeline trenches be examined for organic materials which can
adversely react with the pipeline material
3. All welds are x -rayed
4. As a result of the above finding, sections of pipe be replaced as
necessary
