1982 July CITY OF FRIDLEY SUMMER NEWSLETTER JULY, 1982 NO. 35 FRI D LEY POLICE TAKE PART IN The five components taken together are seen as elements of a lifestyle which goes beyond health as simply absence of VVOLUNTARY FITNESS PROGRAM disease. The goal is a quality kind of living marked by fitness and performance where one is able to handle everyday demands with energy and enthusiasm and still have an What do running a seven minute mile, seeing an occasional abundant reserve for crisis situations. good movie, and eating fresh vegetables have in common? Additional results might include increased productivity, re- duced worker's compensation claims, and lower insurance costs. The optional pilot project has attracted two thirds of the city's sworn officers as participants. The program responds to recent research findings on police officer physical fitness and stress. It was developed by a task force of Fridley Police Officers in conjunction with police management and Vessey and Associates, consulting psychologists. According to James P.Hill,Director of Public Safety,"It all boils down to better service to,the people of Fridley. Police work is incredibly stressful. There is no way to avoid it.To the extent that our officers learn to recognize stress and manage it more effectively the quality of their work will improve." The program has five tracks: exercise, diet, eating habits, Police Technician Barb Hutchinson checks Officer Lawrence relaxation, and low stress activities. All participants will be Chubs blood pressure. involved in the exercise track where they will be challenged to meet physical fitness requirements appropriate for their sex and age. For example, a woman police officer in her early thirties will have to run a mile and a half in less than 14 minutes and 30 seconds;do 14 push-ups in two minutes;and do 23 sit-ups in two minutes. The idea behind the physical fitness requirements is the body's normal reaction to stressful situations—the"fight or flight"response. The prolonged stress of modern life requires d some kind of regular vigorous exercise or it can become bottled up inside and lead to problems. Also the better one's physical condition, especially of the heart, the better one will be able to ! react constructively in a sudden stressful situation. ON, The other four tracks are important too, and some participants will set goals for themselves in two of them. _ Proper weight and good nutrition are components of over-all " fitness, and learning to relax is the other side of the"fight or flight" response. A tape recording will help police officers Officers Robert Friis and Frederick Bebense during a mile learn the techniques of deep relaxation, and participants will and a half run along with seminar directors Terry Nelson, schedule low stress leisure time activities on a regular basis.
