State 6th Grade Essay Contest MIMI - MY GRANDMOTHER by Sarah Genosky I choose to write about "Mimi" because she is special, aren 't all grandparents? Of course all grandpparents are special, but "Mimi" is different. Different because she is special to me. Mimi 's life was rather on the rough side, being poor but never hungry. She grew up oldest of nine children and her parents were both immigrants from Poland. Her mother did. not go to school but her father was considered "educated" for going up to the 4th grade. Mimi helped a lot at raising her .younger brothers and sisters, washing, cooking, and helping her mom with her job . Miml quit. school at 16 and got a j ob in a bag factory. She married at 19 and had four children, After 2 years of being marled, my grandfather died, . She. then worked as a babysitter. One of the kids called her "Mimi" and after I was born, I couldn't say grandma, so she was known to meas Mimi . I would describe Mimi as very kind., caring, and a little stubborn, but acting like a grandmother should, all ways having candy in her purse, sticking up for you when your caught in a problem with your- parents, and letting you do things your parents wouldn't let you do. I remember good times and bad times . Like the time she was in the n hospital with something, wrong with. a artery in her neck, But good times I think have all ways outnumbered bad times . Good times like reading books to me, going to- the park and .when she used to babysit me. We still have good times like looking through old pictures . All in all, Mimi is really special . She says she has never done anything really great, or spectacular but still, you don't have to do anything like that to be special to~ someone you love, SYLVESTER (WESS) SMOLICH by Bobby Smolich Have you ever seen a seventy year=old man . have a mojor stroke and come out of it with no injuries what-so-ever? Well, I have. My grandpa, Sylvester Smolich, had a mc, or stroke nine months ago and is better off now then he was before it happened. The will-to-live is just one of his many characteristics, here are some more; determined, nice, smart, helpful, and inventive. These characteristics of my grandpa I hope to have as a kid and an adult . Most kids have an idol or a hero they look up to, well my grandpa is mine. My grandpa lives in Dinkytown, Minneapolis and so I get tosee him every two weeks . My grandpa likes sports alot and so do I . like baseball the best. We also have alot more in common . We both like trains too, My grandpa and I sometimes go t.o a train bridge nearby and we watch the trains go by. My grandpa Is a very smart person . So, he helps me on things I don't get at school, like math problems . Smolich Cont' My grandpa Wess is a hard working person. He pointed his three story house and put new boarding around it. He is ars0 an inventive person. When he has spare time he fixes things up his own way. He builds his own chairs and other things out of wood My grandpa is also thoughtful and kind. He usually gets me things when 1 don't ask ( like cookies and pop) . He also scratches my back and talks to me about different things. I try to visit my grandpa alot because he is not in good health. He is attached to a pacemaker. When he went into the hospital to get new batteries for it, the doctors had to take him off the pacer. So when they did this his heart stopped, -but when they put it back on, his .heart started to beat again, Because of all this, I try to see him as much as T tan. BECAUSE L LOVE H1M VERY NUN ! ! CLOUD TO ATTEND THE 29th ANNUAL INSTITUTE ON AGING HELD AT ST. CLOUD STATE UNIVERSITY. THIS PROGRAM IS SPONSORED BY THE MINNESOTA BOARD ON AGING WITH THE -PURPOSE OF ACQUAINTING ALL SENIORS WITH WHAT IS AVAILABLE TO THEM IN OUR PRESENT DAY SYSTEM .OF ASSISTANCE. THE DAYS' ACTIVITIES STARTED OUT WITH AN ADDRESS BY DR. HARRY R. MOODY, DIRECTOR AT THE AGING CENTER OF HUNTER COLLEGE. THIS WAS AN UNUSUAL TREAT IN THAT DR. MOODY WAS A SPEAKER, NOT JUST A TALKER. HE PRESENTED HIS SUBJECT WELL, WITHOUT INTERRUPTIVE PAUSES, AND IN CLEAR VOICE, HIS SUBJECT WAS A-TIMELY ONE CONCERNING-NEED-FOR MORE RECOGNITION OF SENIORS NOT ONLY FOR THEMSELVES BUT FOR ALL GENERATIONS, HE POINTED OUT THAT IT IS SENIORS WHO CAN SET EXAMPLES FOR THE YOUNGER PEOPLE. DR. MOODY STATED THAT OUR COUNTRY WAS IN TROUBLE AND THAT WE SHOULD REVERT BACK TO SOME OF OUR OLD VALUES. HE COMPARED OUR YOUNGER DAYS TO.THE PRESENT CONDITION OF THINGS, HE ALSO MENTIONED THE SPLIT IN GENERATIONS SAYING THAT IT WAS UNNECESSARY AND HARMFUL, BUT COULD BE RECTIFIED WITH EFFORTS ON ALL SIDES. DR. MOODY CONCLUDED HIS.ADDRESS BY STATING THAT SENIORS COULD FACE THEIR LAST DAYS COURAGEOUSLY IF THEY KEPT THEIR PRESENT DAY LIVES MEANINGFUL. WE HAVE A DATE WITH DESTINY AND IT IS OUR JOB TO FULFILL THAT DATE. FOLLOWING THE ADDRESS BY DR. MOODY AND A BREAK FOR COFFEE AND ROLLS, THERE WERE SEVERAL SEMINARS THAT LASTED ABOUT AN HOUR WHERE VARIOUS TOPICS RELATING TO SENIORS WERE DISCUSSED AND QUESTIONS ANSWERED. SOME OF THE SUBJECTS WERE HMO'S, SENIORS IN GOVERNMENT, SPIRITUALITY, SECOND CAREERS, FAMILY COMMUNICATION, DEALING WITH LOSS, ARTHRITIS, AND WELLNESS.
