May 20th was the last senior day dance for the summer months. We will start our regular
Sunday senior day in September.
Cards will be played at the center on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday until the weather
becomes too uncomfortable.
Watch this newsletter for more information on the new fall programs. We are going to
have classes in ceramics, pottery and oil painting. Pool and bingo are also planned to
begin in September.
The center is planning on an expanded transportation program for seniors. We are
planning to offer transportation to our classes, and other events here at the center.
A truly wonderful person has left our company. She has left much of her self to us who I
called her friend. She will be missed but not forgotten. Her name is Dorothy Zacher, a
wonderful person.

SENIOR BOWLING
Senior bowling at Maple Lanes continues to attract newcomers as indicated by increased
participation. In the second week of May nearly one hundred people bowled on Monday and
Friday. Even though some seniors are doing yard and spring housework, they are reluctant to
give up their bowling. Last month Pat Kersten won the Town Crier gift certificate for $5.00
and Ruth Rolphe won the Bob's Produce gift certificate.
The seniors are now looking forward to the annual senior tournament held during '49er
Days. Further information is listed in this issue of the newsletter.
BEFRIENDER TRAINING CLASSES
By popular demand, the Befriender Training classes have been postponed until fall. The
eleven week course, which trains senior in communication and listening skills, has been
rescheduled to begin August 20. The classes will be held every Monday from 1:30 p.m. to
4:00 p.m. through November 5, accounting for the September 3rd Labor Day Holiday. Class
locations are St. Williams Catholic Church and Mercy Medical Center.
This postponement has created an opportunity to extend the application/recruiting
period through July 27 and all those interested in becoming Bef rienders are encouraged to
apply. Applications can be obtained from Ruth Smith, St. Williams Church or Jo Ellen
Christiansen, Anoka County Community Action Program, 572-0060, extension 15. Contact either
of these people if you have questions or if you would like to arrange for someone to speak
to a group about the Befriender program.
SENIOR WORKSHOP
Many home repairs and maintenance tasks are easy as long as you have basic tools and
the right information. If you are over 55 years of age, you are invited to attend a free
workshop on introduction to tools and simple home repairs at the Community Education Center
on Tuesday, June 19th a 1:00 p.m. Learn what tools you need to perform simple home repairs
and see how to use them.
This workshop is sponsored by the City Wide Advisory Committee on Home Improvements
Education. Funding has been provided by the Medtronics Foundation. For more information,
call Sue Schonfeld at 348-4085.
