FALL FOLIAGE HOLIDAY
The deadline to register for three glorious days and two fantastic nights at the beautiful
North Shore of Lake Superior is fast approaching. Final payment is due by August 15 at the
Fridley Recreation Department. Checks should be payable to "SUNSHINE TRAVEL CO. INC.". The
motorcoach departs Fridley at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 23 and returns Tuesday evening,
September 25. Cost is $169 per person based on double occupancy. If you have any questions
regarding this trip, a slide show will be presented at Village Green on Monday, August 6th
at 7:00 p.m. Plan to attend and see what lies ahead on the scenic outing.

Department no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, August 20th. Correct entries will be eligible
for a prize drawing. Prizes donated by the Fridley Senior Center. Answers and winners

GET ACQUAINTED WITH FRIDLEY'S OUTSTANDING SENIOR LADY - ALICE FUGERE
Alice Piche was born on a farm just north of Detroit Lakes where she spent the
first four years of her life amidst the lakes and woods of Minnesota's north country.
Alice's parents later moved to the City of Detroit Lakes where Aliced attended school
completing primary, junior and senior high and graduated. Shortly after graduation
Alice's folks moved to Fargo, North Dakota where Alice took a job as waitress in a
Fargo restaurant. While in Fargo, Alice met Henry Fugere who was the man who became
her husband. After their marriage in 1930 they took their first business venture in
the Black Hawk Cafe located in Ada, Minnesota.
In 1933, Alice and Henry moved to the Twin City area where Alice was employed at
Powers until the couple decided to look around a bit. After spending a winter in
Miami and New Orleans, partly working, vacationing and looking for business
opportunities, Alice and Henry returned to the city area in 1937, where Alice gave
birth to a son and a daughter. Alice's son works as an assembler in the metro area
and her daughter is a purchaser for a paper company in Mankato.
In 1945, Alice started working for the Cream of Wheat company as a machine
operator, transferring later to the dining section, where she became lady in charge of
all dining operations. During her employment at Cream of Wheat, she also served as an
officer in their credit union.
The Fugeres took up residence in Fridley in 1951. Henry passed away in 1964.
Alice continued to live at the same place that they bought in Fridley and still
resides there. In 1976, after 29 years of commendable service, Alice retired from her
job and officially entered the ranks of senior.
Joining the Friendly Fridley Folks in 1977 , Alice served a term on the
refreshment committee, helping wherever needed. When Congregate Dining first came to
Fridley, Alice was one of the first volunteers as a server and helped in the kitchen
and received two awards for her efforts. Upon joining a senior square dance group,
she served terms as secretary, treasurer, and vice president and also helped plan the
group's events. Another credit to Alice was her two years of volunteer work at Maple
Manor, a special care home located in Anoka where she received recognition for special
work. For six years Alice provided taxi service for some of the sisters at Immaculate
Conception in Columbia Heights.
Probably many of us remember Alice as the tour lady with Greyhound Tour Service.
Alice brought us news of the various tours offered by the bus company, helped organize
the trips and acted as tour guide on a number of occasions. Alice recently left the
position with Greyhound to devote more time to her hobbies which include china
painting, rosemaling, hardanger, knitting and other needle work. Alice still likes to
stay active in senior programs, promoting senior interest, helping wherever needed.
To stay fit, Alice likes to walk, especially with the club that she belongs to.
She also does some exercising.
Probably Alice's greatest commendation is her sincere interest in other people.

PISTACHIO DESSERT - Served by Myrtle Rapp at Carl's cabin
Layer 1: 1 cup flour; 1/4 lb. butter; 2 T sugar;
Blend and press into 9x13 pan. Bake 10-15 minutes @ 350. Cool.
Layer 2: 8 oz. cream cheese; 2/3 c. powder sugar; 1/2 large Cool Whip;
Mix and spread on first layer.
Layer 3: 2 pkg. instant pistachio pudding; 3 cups milk;
Beat until thick and spread on second layer.
Layer 4: Beat Cool Whip and spread on top.
Can make the day before. Very good with other pudding flavors too.
GETTING TO KNOW FRIDLEY'S OUTSTANDING SENIOR MAN - ERNIE POWELL
Ernest Parke Powell was born in Bristol, Pennsylvania, a town just north of
Philadelphia, where he attended school and graduated from high school in 1928. Upon
completion of his normal schooling, Ernie took a four year course in mechanical
engineering at the same time working as a machinist apprentice for a firm in
Philadelphia. After working 23 years as a machine designer for two different
companies in the City of Philadelphia, Ernie left the East for the Twin City area.
Some time during the latter part of his educational career, Ernie was advised by
a friend to get acquainted with "that girl" who was watching a tennis match. Margaret
Elizabeth Dryburgh evidently found Ernie' s company agreeable and they became good
friends, later blossoming into courtship and finally marriage. Ernie and Betty moved
to Fridley in 1955 with Ernie traveling to St. Paul where he was employed as an
Assistant Chief Engineer at a St. Paul firm. In 1960 Ernie transferred to Cornelius
Company in Anoka where he was an in-plant machine designer. Ernie retired in 1975
after contributing 39 years to his vocation.
Ernie and Betty had three sons, Bill, Bob and Don, all who reside in the metro
area. Bill and Don followed in their father' s footsteps, entering the engineering
field. Bob has been teaching in public schools for nearly 20 years.
During his working years, Ernie has been associated with many humanitarian
organizations, one being Odd Fellows Lodge where he completed degree work and was also
honored as a Past Grand. Another organization was the Masonic Lodge in which he has a
life membership after 33 years of membership. Ernie's time as an Odd Fellow Lodge
member is 50 years and he is also a life member in that lodge.
During Fridley's early years, Ernie worked as a night court clerk serving under
one of Fridley's first municipal judges, Elmer Johnson. Ernie can recount many
interesting experiences from those days. To add to his community credits, Ernie served
four years on the School Board of District 14, later serving as a part time fill-in
employee. In 1958-60 Ernie was Fridley's PTA President.
In 1935 Ernie was accredited with saving a young girl's life. The girl was near
drowning in a swimming pool and Ernie rescued her. In 1948 Ernie rushed a man, victim
of a plant accident, to a hospital which was ten miles distant.
In his later years, Ernie has managed to fill his days with much volunteer
activities driving for Congregate Dining, RSVP, church and the Anoka County
Transportation System, in the latter having received an award for driving the most
mileage for that year, 1977. He has also offered his time and energies as a solicitor
for the March of Dimes, Muscular Dystrophy, Heart Fund and has been a director for the
March of Dimes since 1961.
Closely associated with his church, which he holds in high esteem, Ernie has held
positions of Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, historian, secretary
of the board and has served on numerous committees over the past years.
Demonstrating model trains has been another task that Ernie enjoys, showing in
schools and churches whenever requested. Ernie belongs to the National Model Railroad
Association.
In his most recent volunteer work, Ernie has been serving as the Friendly Fridley
Folks treasurer and doing an excellent job in that office.
The many little personal things that Ernie has done for the people around him
would be too numerous to list. We can only say that any one so devoted to his fellow
men is truly a great credit to his community and country. It certainly is no wonder
that Ernie Powell was chosen as Fridley's Outstanding Senior Man.

BEFRIENDER TRAINING CLASSES
By popular demand, the Befriender Training classes have been postponed until fall.
The eleven week course, which trains senior in communication and listening skills, has
been rescheduled to begin AUGUST 20. The classes will be held every Monday from 1:30
p.m, to 4:00 p.m. through November 5, accounting for the September 3rd Labor Day
Holiday. Class locations are St. Williams Catholic Church and Mercy Medical Center.
This postponement has created an opportunity to extend the application/recruiting
period through July 27 and all those interested in becoming Befrienders are encouraged
to apply. Applications can be obtained from Ruth Smith, St. Williams Church or Jo Ellen
Christiansen, Anoka County Community Action Program, 572-0060, extension 15. Contact
either of these people if you have questions or if you would like to arrange for someone
