conflict and friendship between an older Irish priest and an idealistic
young seminarian. What begins as a debate between two men on opposite
sides of a generation-theological gap becomes a warm comedy of truly
universal appeal.

FRIDLEY NEIGHBORS
One day in the month of September back in the year of 1900, a Swedish married
couple, Anna and John Nelson, became the proud parents of a baby boy. Father John was
elated because he knew that the family name would be carried on and Mother Anna felt
fulfillment from her son's birth. The new parents chose the name of Carl for their new
family addition partly because that is a good Swedish name and probably for the name of
the City where they resided, Karlstad, the name of Minnesota's Karlstad.
Carl attended school in the City of his birth until he was thirteen and as was the
custom in those days, he then entered a trade school. It was there that Carl learned
about painting and paper hanging and in five years received a rating of journeyman.
After working in his native land for another five years, Carl decided to seek a new life
in the land of opportunities. Carl's first big opportunity came when he met a young
girl by the name of Signe Johnson, who was later to become his wife. Shortly after his
marriage in 1924, Carl and a friend named Oscar entered into a partnership of painting
contractors which continued until 1948. It was then that Carl decided he was ready for
his next important move, thus the first Nelson paint shop came into existence, located
in northeast Minneapolis on Central Avenue. The success of his new business prompted
Carl to expand, choosing the then new City of Fridley. The Nelson family moved to
Fridley in 1955 after selling the Minneapolis shop to devote more time to the newer
place of business. Offering excellent service, being ready with requested information
and handling economy products has helped Carl build his business up to the extent that
two more stores were opened in subsequent years.
During Carl's early working years he found time to be active in one of his most
loved ways of unwinding - singing. As a tenor in a quartet that sang on one of the
local radio stations in the twenties, Carl gained experience and branched into choir and
other choral groups. In 1952 Carl joined the Shriners and was active in that
organization until recently. Shortly after becoming a Fridley resident, Carl joined the
Fridley Lions Club, an organization interested in helping people who have special needs.
In 1962, Carl, along with Ernie Madsen and Bob Hughes, became the initial starters of
the Fridley Chamber of Commerce, an organization devoted to the promotion of business
health and the welfare of Fridley in general. A few years later Carl was a part of a
trio, Dr. John Hanson and Wyman Smith, that started the Fridley Rotary Club, a group of
people interested in student well-being. Carl has been a long time member of Fridley
Redeemer Church, not only as a many year member of the choir, but also in other
capacities such as president of the Council during the church's expansion to a new
building.
Carl and Signe had two boys to carry on the Nelson name - Gordon, married and
living in Fridley, and Richard, married, living across the river from Fridley. Both
sons have continued in the paint store business and show exemplary signs of following in
the fashion of their meritous father. Not only have Carl's sons done well in the paint
business, but they have also presented Carl with seven grandchildren.
In 1965 Carl made an important and maybe somewhat painful decision, to retire from
the world of business that had given him many turns of satisfaction. Taking an early
advantage of his retirement, Carl, along with Signe, made a six thousand mile trip to
see the country that he had never had time to see before. Carl has also made five trips
back to Sweden to visit relatives and friends. These were memorable times for the
Nelson family.
In 1974 Carl was very saddened when Signe, his wife and mate of fifty years, passed
away. Carl did the best he could to accept the unwelcome change by associating with the
people around him as much as possible. One such activity was the Friendly Fridley Folks
which he joined in 1975. Carl's interest, along with other members of this senior club,
was to find and promote ways for seniors to enjoy their retirement years. Carl, along
with son Gordon and daughter-in-law Jean, has been a most willing host to two seniors
groups at his cabin on Spectacle Lake. This has been a yearly trip for the seniors who
eagerly look forward to it as a highlight of their calendar. It provides a day out for
seniors in a manner fitting for royalty. In this way Carl provides something that
merits commendation and many many thanks. In a final word, let's say Carl is generous,
certainly not wasteful, is careful, and a friend to the deserving.

Department no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, September 17th. Correct entries will be

SENIOR CENTER NEWS
September is almost here. Where has the summer gone? The State Fair is here and
winter is just around the corner. Now is the time to plan for your fall and winter
activities.
The senior center will have some new programs. The most exciting I believe will be
ceramics. We have our own kiln for firing so we won't send our work out for this
process. I will start this class in October. Watch for further information.
There will be a class in oil painting. The first by the well known master of
turpentine and oily rags. This class will start in October. Watch for more information
in the newsletter.
Crafts are starting August 23. The craft group needs new people with new ideas.
Invite a friend to join. The new display case should be ready by the end of September.
Cards will be played at the usual time and day. A tournament for 500 and cribbage
will be the last day of each month for that particular event.
Square dancing will be each Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. I am hoping that this
change will bring out more people to the classes and dancing. All of the square dancers
from last winter should bring a friend, one male and one female. We have enough women.
We need more men or couples.
Ballroom dancing, bingo and cards will start September 16th. A bus will be
provided if we have at least eight riders. The time will be from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m.
Bingo is being planned, starting in October. Watch for information in the
newsletter and senior center bulletin board.
The two pool tables have been re-covered and the pool cues have new tips so we are
ready for pool playing in October. Watch for more information in the newsletter.

BOWLING NEWS
Bowling - rolling the ball down the lane to see how many pins can avoid your
careful aim. It's more than that - it's enjoying the company of friends, new and old,
it's a time to leave responsibilities behind and relax for an hour or so, it's seeing if
the old eye can measure up. The Monday and Friday bowling for seniors at Maple Lanes is
open to all seniors over 55 at reduced rates.
The lanes are good. Maple Lane furnishes coffee, cookies and prizes. Last month,
Cliff Dybdal won the five dollar certificate from Town Crier. The Monday special still
continues to attract new bowlers regularly. Other events are being planned. No need to
call for reservations - just come to bowl or visit or both. All seniors welcome.
Bowling time is 1:00 p.m. Mondays and Fridays.
