Activities at the Center should have a flying start in October. Crafters are really in full swing, getting ready for the Craft A'Fair. The crafters invite new members to come and join them - both men and women. They meet every Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Classes in ceramics and oil painting have not been finalized as of now. I am hopeful that they will begin in October. Watch for more information. Congregate Dining is now five years old in Fridley. Participation by the seniors has slowly been declining. We need to bring our attendance up. It is said that aids to good health are hugging and laughing, as well as eating. Come to Congregate Dining and enjoy some of each. Look for more information on dining in this newsletter. EAST CENTRAL LEGAL SERVICES - JERRY SPEGMAN, CAMBRIDGE MINNESOTA Senior citizens in Anoka County can now get free legal help with certain problems through a new program which is a joint effort of the Cambridge office of the Legal Aid Society of Minneapolis and Judicare of Anoka County. This program is funded by the Metropolitan Council under Title III of the Older Americans Act. Seniors can receive assistance by calling one of two numbers depending upon the nature of their problem. If the problem involves any type of public benefits such as Social Security, Medicare, medical assistance or subsidized housing, or if it concerns health insurance or nursing home issues, seniors should call 427-4613. Seniors who need help with a consumer problem such as debt collection or repossession, or have questions about conservatorship/guardianship should call 421-4760, extension 1380. Either number can be called for problems relating to landlord/tenant rights or Conciliation Court cases. Although the above list of problems is by no means a complete description of what this new program handles, there is a short list of problem areas in which the program specifically will not be able to assist seniors. This list includes estate planning, probate, real estate, taxes and criminal matters. Finally, the program will also conduct legal education seminars on topics within its expertise to senior groups in the county. Examples of such seminars would be ones dealing with supplemental health insurance and the medical assistance program as it relates to nursing home care. Groups seeking a speaker to conduct a seminar should call 427-4613. Jerry Spegman will be at the Fridley Senior Center the last Wednesday of each month, beginning at 9:30 a.m. on a first come, first served basis. The 427-4613 number will be the number to use. If you need legal help call me at the Center and I will notify Jerry when he calls or call him direct at his toll free number, 1-800-622-7772. Tony Lorbeski Senior Center Manager 571-6000, extension 222 SENIOR OUTREACH WORKER The Anoka County Community Action Program has hired a Senior Outreach Worker to serve the seniors of Fridley. The current contract will run through the end of May, 1985. Her name is Darlene Zurawski, a resident of Fridley, and she is anxious to meet and talk with the seniors in the community. The purpose of the outreach program is to link seniors with needs to programs and services designed to meet those needs. ACCAP is able to provide this service because of a Community Development Block Grant fund allocation by the City of Fridley to ACCAP specifically for this function. If you would like Darlene to pay you a visit, call 572-0060, extension 15. DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE The State Legislature passed a law this year, which requires insurance companies to reduce auto insurance premiums for seniors 65 and older who complete an accident prevention course every three years. This law applies to policies issued, delivered or renewed after January 1, 1985. In response to this, the senior coordinators in Anoka County have encouraged a defensive driving course be set up for Anoka County area seniors. This is an eight hour National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course. Students who attend a minimum of seven hours will receive a card to certify completion. The instructors will be Captain Jerry Wallin from the Blaine Police Department and a Minnesota State Trooper. Also featured will be booths providing senior citizens with information about special dietary needs such as dealing with low sodium, low cholesterol, low sugar and diabetic exchanges. YOUR FRIDLEY NEIGHBORS EARL AND HELEN DEEG Helen and Earl moved to Fridley just three years before the Great Tornado of 1965 and lost their home but survived due to good fortune. But let' s go back to where it all started. Earl was born in 1899 on a farm located near Lamberton, Minnesota, a fairly small town located just west of Mankato. By the time Earl was of school age his family had moved to a farm near Brainerd. As there was no school in the immediate area, some local men, Earl's dad included, built a school, where Earl's education began. After a brief residence at Wahpeton, North Dakota, the Deeg family returned to Lamberton where Earl entered high school, taking two years of agriculture study. In 1922 Earl went with his family to Springfield, Minnesota where his dad operated a much bigger farm. After six years of farming with his dad, Earl decided to try a new field when a job with the telephone company became available. Enter Helen. Helen was born on a farm near Springfield in the year of 1911 . Helen' s first experience in education was in a two room schoolhouse where eight grades were taught - four grades in each room. Helen remembers that the school also had a basement and an upstairs auditorium where most of the town events took place. When Helen started high school she stayed with her grandmother who lived in Springfield. Upon graduation, Helen entered Mankato Commercial College where she took courses in office and business interest. Helen' s dad was paralyzed and needed help to run his farm and a fellow by the name of Earl Deeg was available and agreeable to terms. Helen's dad arranged the meeting of his daughter and his new hired keeper. That was in 1931 and one year later the newlyweds started a life of their own. Two years later Helen's brother was old enough to run his dad's farm and Earl was free to strike out on his own. An opportunity to enter the electrical field with the R.E.A. came about. Earl helped and in many cases supervised the building of many thousands of miles of rural electric lines. From the R.E.A. Earl branched out in other parts of the electric field such as installing motors and generators in large plants and wiring buildings. In his line of work, Earl found it necessary to travel around a lot, which he and Helen and a daughter born in 1936 did in a mobile home. Some of the places the Deeg family have lived and worked in are Slayton, Braham, and New Brighton in Minnesota, Camp McCoy and Madison in Wisconsin and several towns in Iowa and Illinois. Besides working in buildings, Earl has worked in ship yards, rail yards, refining plants and power plants. At East St. Louis the Deeds found roots for 14 years from 1946 to 1960. After work was finally completed there, the Deegs spent two more years in Peoria where Earl worked for the Catterpillar Co. Helen divided her time between being a housewife, mother to daughter Diane, husband comfortor and working off and on at various jobs. Helen and Earl moved to Fridley in 1962 and took up residence in Fridley Terrace. Earl continued to work in the vicinity and some outlying jobs until his retirement at the age of 71 years. Earl took up the job of woodworking which kept him off the streets and out of the bars until failing eyesight forced him to cut down. Earl served as general repairman at Fridley Terrace for many years, mostly volunteer status. He was also one of the first Anoka County transportation drivers. Earl and Helen were among the charter members of Friendly Fridley Folks, where Earl was elected the first treasurer. He remembers their first deposit in the bank was $18.20. Helen served two years as the club's second secretary. Before the completion of her term as secretary, she became the first club representative to the Well Clinic, a position she still holds. Helen and Earl are active in a senior club at St. Phillip's Church and help or have helped wherever there was a need, such as newsletter assembly, craft group, Girl Scouts and RSVP. Helen and Earl are proud of their two granddaughters, both of whom attend universities in Illinois, one to be a nurse and the other preparing for education work. Two years ago Helen and Earl observed their 25th wedding anniversity with an open house at St. Phillip's where more than 300 friends and relatives helped them celebrate the occasion. Also in that year, Helen was chosen as outstanding senior lady (Queen) to represent Fridley at the Anoka County contest. While in Illinois on one of their sojourns there, Helen and Earl were flooded out of their home, and then came the tornado in Fridley that destroyed their mobile home. Luckily they were away when the storm hit. Now they continue to be the kind of solid citizens that have been so instrumental in the carrying on of the American tradition. We of Fridley appreciate people like that.
