A VERSE FOR THOSE OVER THIRTY Remember when hippie meant big in hips When swinger was someone who swung on a swing And a trip involved travel in cars, planes or And pad was sort of a cushiony thing? ships? And 'way out' meant distant and far, far away When pot was a vessel for cooking things in And a man couldn't sue you for calling him 'gay'? And hooked was what grandmother might have been? When fix was a verb meaning mean or repair And 'be in' meant simple existing somewhere? Words once so sensible, sober and serious When neat meant well organized, tidy and clean Are making the scene, man like psycho delerious. And grass was a ground cover, usually green. It's groovy, day groovy, but English it's not Me thinks the rnglish is going to pot. when lights, not people, were turned on and off And the pill was intended to help cure a cough. When groovy meant furrowed with channel and hollows And birds were winged creatures like robins and swallows. The following is an essay contest winner on the subject of Grandparents from Rice Creek Elementary School. GRANDPARENTS Grandparents are great and fun to have around. I'm still not sure whether the grand in grandparents stands for old or grand, meaning great. Grandparents are nice, but once in a while they get mad at us and even yell at us, but I know they do that because they care and love us. I think there is a different love between kids and parents and kids and grandparents. It is no worse or better, but I know it's not the same. Grandparents believe you even if everybody else says you' re wrong, they still stand by your side. I remember once my sister started a fight and she ended up crying. My Mom blamed me but my grandma spoke up and told my mom the truth. My sisters were blamed and my Mom apologized. Most people can't imagine a grandma mountain climbing or doing other active things, but my grandma does. After my grandpa died, I thought my grandma would never be active again. Boy, was I wrong. Now she goes hiking, mountain climbing and she went to Las Vegas all ready. She is in Arizona now. I guess that proves that widows are and can be active as younger people. My conclusion is, grandparents are great.
