THE HAYES ANNEX
In 1929 fire destroyed the district' s school and the system was without a
plant until 1931 when another school, presently called the Hayes Annex, was
completed. Parents send their children to other schools in the meantime, but the
new building made the waiting worthwhile. The new school was located at what is
now 611 Mississippi Street but was then an intrusion in a cow pasture. The stucco
structure was of a story and a half design and included a gymnasium in the
basement, two 25 by 35 foot classrooms upstairs each with its own cloakroom. One
classroom even contained the library which was a 9 by 15 alcove lined with book
shelves and located off the end of one of the rooms. What a luxury compared to the
usual library which was a cabinet in the classroom itself. But the greatest
advancement was the indoor chemical tank toilets. The old school had featured the
more typical outdoor privies.
The soundness of the construction was emphasized in 1965 when it survived the
tornado largely unscathed. The building has had a long and varied use. From the
beginning the school and particularly the gymnasium served as a community center.
Since then at various times the building has been the site of village meetings,
court trials, church, church Bible school, Boy Scout activities, the Anoka Day
Activity Center, administrative office site for District 14, as well as for school
itself.

A New Year's Eve party for seniors of Fridley is being planned. Watch for

The Senior Advisory Board invites seniors to attend the Board Meetings, and if
you have an opinion you would like to express, a time is set aside called "open
mike". The next meeting is November 9 at 2:00 p.m.

AN OPPORTUNITY TO SERVE
As the Friendly Fridley Folks progress in time and stature, it seems that it
becomes increasingly difficult to get members to consider candidacies for office.
This condition could lead to disruptive negativism within our senior club.
Candidates do not need to be super people, they need not be hard workers, nor
experienced leaders. Mostly, just being honest is all that is required.
If you feel you would like to be a candidate or know of someone who would like
to be, please call either Helen and Matt Szczech at 572-8887 or Bea and Charles
Kryzer at 571-4908. The announcement of candidates will be at the Tuesday,
November 1st meeting.
The Friendly Fridley Folks meetings are now scheduled for the first and third
Tuesday of each month from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.
Congratulations to Alex Berberich for being elected area vice-president for the
Minnesota Metro Senior Federation .

Our Fridley Title I program which is designed to help children in reading and/or math is
encouraging seniors to develop special relationships with our Title I kids. The volunteers
work with the children doing a variety of activities that reinforce and provide practice in
the skill area or areas that are in need of extra help.
Their involvement will be a plus in providing that personal, special touch and caring so
important to a child's self-esteem.
It's great to see a community become involved at this level because seniors have so much
to offer children. Although they sometimes feel apprehensive at first, it doesn't take long
before they feel comfortable.
Please consider becoming a volunteer - you'll make some child feel special. If you have
any questions about the program, call me at Hayes Elementary, 571-6000.

I AM A GREAT BELIEVER IN THE IDEA THAT TROUBLE IS THE
