C --------------------------._----------.--------_--------------- ---._----- PEER COUNSELOR PROGRAM SEEKS SENIOR FOR TRAINING This is a program to train persons 60 and over to be counselors to other older persons. Called Peer Counselors, these persons will learn listening and verbal skills necessary to help others with problems, They will be expected to be primarily effective and careful listeners. They will learn about the network of referrals, and about follow-up techniques. There are two parts to the training program. The first part consists of one 2' hour session for 13 weeks. Applicants accepted into the program will be expected to attend all 13 sessions, as well as a 2-day workshop at the end of the 13 weeks, Participants in the training program will then serve in a 40--hour supervised counseling experience. Upon completion of training, peer counselors will be asked to volunteer their services about one-half day per week in agencies which serve s .nior citiz.onso They will have the support and assistance of trained professionals with all of their volunteer work.
